Tesla original plan is to make their business profitable by the year of 2020. But with the overwhelm response on their latest Model 3, Tesla have to speed up the development of their Giga-factory in just two years, and they may need to invest more money in years to come.
Initially, Tesla is expected to produce 500,000 units vehicle a year by 2020, but now they need to achieve the target by the end of 2018. With more things will bring upfront, it means Tesla have to put more money investing in many areas for improvement and they are willing to sacrifice their early projected profit for the long term goal. They also announced their new factory which producing batteries for Tesla vehicles able to cater their new shifting plan.
On the other hand, although people knows Tesla will only deliver the Model 3 until at the end 2017, more people are putting their money for the pre-order. With the recent announcement made by Elon Musk by saying the Tesla Model 3 will have a ludicrous mode, it makes people more excited and also help Tesla to sustain the demand.
